  Permissions for Mod Conversions/Updates
This Page has been viewed 6,231 times

As many of you already know that when mods are converted and/or updated by a different modder, there is a modus operandi or to put it more bluntly, proper conduct, to be taken into account. This is just a little reminder to new modders, new community members and everyone in general about how to go about getting permission to remod, update or convert another person's mod.
and the repercussions of not doing so

Note- All it takes is one email, not more that 5 minutes of your time. Therefore there are no excuses.

Porting from another game or updating/remodding another mod.

1. Getting Permission
  • If you are porting mods from another game or updating an existing mod that is not belonging to you, you must first get the original authors permission. It is very rare that a Modder will disallow his/her mod to be reused so there should be no excuse for not asking for permission.
2. When Posting
  • If you do get the all clear to proceed with using the original author's model you must give them credit in your readme. This is usually, an acknowledgement of who they are, their email address, and URL of their homepage if they have any.
3. Make sure you have Proof of this
  • What is now obligatory to prove that permission is granted, is to provide a copy of your email of your request and the response from the author into your file submission. This is mandatory to cover yourself in the highly unlikely case that the original author attempts in the future to accuse you of stealing their mod.. Again, this is highly unlikely but it has occurred in some rare cases before.
If mod is submitted without permission

1. File Deletion
  • If proven that no mutual agreement or permission was established then the File will be deleted immeadiately after it has been agreed by the staff that the modder didn't recieve permission. Decision is final.
2. Banning
  • Depending on the severity of the claim or if you are a serial culprit (i.e you have done this more than once and it is proven so) you will more than likely be given a ban from Filefront. This can range from a short ban to lenghty ban, a permanent ban and/or all your Mods removed from the Filefront Database, this is nearly always decided by the head administrator of the site, in consultation with the rest of the staff, his/her decision is final.
  • This will undoubtedly damage your reputation beyond repair, and in a modding community that can spell the end of a modder.

Some mods have instant permission granted in their readmes

Such as "Feel Free to use this if you want to in your mod". This doesn't necessarily mean you don't have to ask for permission first. Technically, the original modder is telling you that they won't refuse permission. It is courteous, polite and respectful to the original author to ask for permission, therefore it is mandatory.

Now you have been informed of the correct procedures on permission requesting, therefore good luck in your enterprises in the modding community, may you succeed in all your ventures

Thank you
Regards
