Dissection of an ODF Starship File: Overview and Troubleshooting Tips - File Description

Size vs. Usefulness: 10

Overall Rating: 10

Description:
Here we've got a pretty good tutorial for starship odfs from dissembly:
Quote:
This is a dissection of an *.odf file from Star Trek: Legacy; *.odf files are the files you need to modify for the most basic levels of modding starships. All you need to carry out the modifications suggested here is a basic text-file editor.

It contains basic information on what (almost!) every working line of the *.odf file seems to do, along with trouble-shooting tips as-you-go, explaining the causes of common issues in skirmish mode (including crashes on the ship selection menu, missing warp drives, bizarre problems encountered while making playable space stations, and other assorted bits and pieces).

I seriously recommend this download for everyone who wants to become a Legacy modder, since this is an easy start for everyone. All you need is Notepad wink
Two Thumbs Up!

Dissection of an ODF Starship File: Overview and Troubleshooting Tips - Readme
Readme File:
This is a point-by-point dissection of the *.odf files used in the game Star Trek: Legacy by Bethesda Softworks. Feel free to distribute/quote this at your leisure.

AcidFluxxBase included a brief introduction to odf files in his walkthrough, but as it was an introduction only, it left out a great deal of detail. This is intended to be a run-down of everything i've picked up about "*.odf" files, both by trial and error and by asking questions on the forums.

It consists of a *.html file, a *.jpg and a *.bmp. Open up the *.html file to see everything. The *.bmp is the dissection itself.

My goal in writing this was to provide myself with a single reference while editing odf files. I thought i would make it widely available in case other n00bs also find it useful. It's a convenient thing to have opened beside your *.odf files while you're editing them.

This is very good but the layout of the tutorial is a bit topsy-turvy. I suggest posting this in the Tutorial Forum - http://forums.filefront.com/stl-tutorials-1420/
and laying it out better using the same colour coded text and the code tags

This is basically How to Edit a Ship Odf. Stations are relatively similar to Ships but with a few differences. Then there are other main types of odfs are Phaser, Photon, Pulse, and Physics. Ofcourse there are various other specalized odfs.

I think you did a good job with what you had to work with. I'd suggest it wouldn't be bad to do the 3 weapon types if your up to it. Physics is a bit more, but would be cool too. You could see people getting into deeper odf work more quickly that way. A little cleaner method of making it would be cool, but not sure what I'd suggest.
